LA PAZ
GROTESQUE CELEBRATION OF ARISTOPHANES
AUTOR: FRANCISCO NIEVA

ABOUT OUR PEACE
Starting from the facundia that the Nievaristophanesque universe offers us with this sarcastic work, we are going to create a work with a great sense of spectacularity in which the music and the scenic art will have a fundamental value, as is usual in the work of the director Rakel Camacho.
Within a contemporary proposal, the classical theatrical tradition will be combined with different scenic languages, constructing a whole display of scenic creativity to inhabit the Roman theatre of Mérida as it deserves.
The keys and strong points of La Paz will be humour, visual spectacle, dance, music, performativity, physical theatre and any resource that enhances the expressiveness and absurdity of this comedy in which La Paz defeats La Guerra.

2024: FIRST CENTENARY OF FRANCISCO NIEVA

Since Nieva died in 2016, his play Coronada y el toro, premiered at Teatro Español (2023), has only been staged once, to great public and critical acclaim. This has been possible thanks to the fact that stage director Rakel Camacho, together with Sanra Produce, set out to vindicate and fervently pay tribute to the author, who has contributed so much to contemporary theatre with classical roots and to the letters of our country. Francisco Nieva wrote the excellent adaptation of Aristophanes' play La paz, which premiered at the Mérida Theatre Festival in 1977. Nieva transforms Aristophanes' play and adapts it to Spanish reality by changing the role of many of the characters. The burlesque and ironic tone is achieved through humour.
Aristophanes, one of the first Greek playwrights, wrote the comedy The Peace (Greek: "Eirene") in the city of Dionysia. It was performed there just before the ratification of the Peace of Nicias in 421 BC, which promised (but ultimately failed) to end the Peloponnesian War. Aristophanes is a genius at theatricalising the life of the Athenians and endowing it with the biting criticism that humour entails. Nieva transforms this circumstantial dimension into a celebration, a feast of the senses and of language where, by eliminating concrete references, the universal sense of the grotesque is increased. In Nieva's La paz, the concept of theatre as catharsis is shown in all its fullness; it is secret medicine, / sorcery, / alchemy of the spirit, / jubilant fury without respite. Aristophanes, the first comic poet, surprises any man of our time with his critical and satirical genius, with his unexpected lyricism, with his imaginative capacity, so close to surrealism.

SYNOPSIS
Athens is at war. Trigeo, vinedresser of Attica, undertakes the heroic act of bringing peace to his city. One morning he wakes up with a quixotic, irrepressible desire to go up to Olympus to ask the gods for explanations. Like a knight-errant who will not stop until he undoes the mess, he rides on the back of his giant beetle (a highly valued animal in Aristophanes' mythological universe).
The fable of this comedy, the irreverent fruit of the union between the theatre of Nieva and that of Aristophanes (the original author), is an invocation to the goddess Peace, with all the difficulties that this noble will entails...
The Athenian slaves, kneading excrement that they will use to feed the giant dung beetle that Trigeo will use to fly to a private meeting with the gods. "At this very moment, the performance will begin to the clear voice of SHIT! announces Coryphaeus.
When Trigeo arrives at the house of the gods, only Hermes is there; the other gods have gone to a remote refuge in the hope that they will never again be disturbed by battle, but War stalks in, victorious as a hurricane...
Trigeo is told that Peace is imprisoned, mistreated, cadaverous, in a nearby cave. Coryphaeus, chorus and anyone who fancies themselves as a human being on the road to civilisation, will carry out the rescue in order to establish pacifism.
In La Paz the mixed and the incoherent, the allegory and the symbol reign, there is in it utopia and escapism, if you will, from society. Fantasy dominates. Spectacle and audience know that they belong to the unreal plane of the theatre and the Dionysian festival, to their restricted freedom in space and time...
Let us take care of Peace and, if necessary, let us pretend a paradise for it on earth.
